Description

 (a) Photographs of the uncoated and diamond-coated quartz membranes are provided as .JPEG and .TIFF files. (b) SEM micrograph of the uncoated quartz membrane is provided as .TIFF file. (c) Photographs of the nanodiamod coating solutions used in the fabrication process are provided as .TIFF files.

The zeta potential (ζ), defined as the potential difference between the stationary layer of fluid at a material’s surface and the bulk aqueous phase that surrounds it, is measured through electrokinetic effects, and presented as the best possible experimental indicator of surface charge. Zeta potential data is provided as .xlsx files. Two files are provided for each membrane coating, since an 'acid' and 'base' side of the measurement must be taken separately. Once the file is opened, select the sheet named 'Table' and plot the two columns named 'pH' and 'zeta potential'

TEM micrographs of the diamond-coated and uncoated quartz fibers taken from the membrane are provided in .TIFF format.

Thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) measures the mass of a sample as the temperature is raised. TGA data is provided in .txt format. Once opened, plot 'program temperature' vs 'unsubtracted weight'. BET specific surface area data is also presented in .txt format. The value for surface area is given in the file.

Zeta potential data is provided as .xlsx files. Once the file is opened, select the sheet named 'Table' and plot the two columns named 'pH' and 'zeta potential'

The membrane is challenged with filtering a synthetic dye molecule (acid black 2) from water by electrostatic adsoprtion alone. Results from the filtration tests are provided in .xlsx format. Since acid black 2 absorbs at 570 nm, its concentration in water can be determined by UV-VIS spectrophotometer. The first sheet displays the relationship between concentration and absorbance for acid black 2 in water. The second sheet titled 'filtration volume vs removal' displays absorbance data for the permeate for increasing filtrered volumes.

Photographs of acid black 2 feed water and permeate are provided as .TIFF files. Photographs of membranes taken from the membrane stack folloswing filtration of acid black 2 are provided as .TIFF files.

The results of membrane retention tests for MS2 bacteriophage dispersed in water are provided in .xlsx format. Each tab is labelled with the pH at which the filtration tests were conducted under.
