The dataset is related to the preparation of synthetic georgeite (a copper-zinc hydroxycarbonate) and its use as a catalyst precursor for the methanol synthesis and low temperature water gas shift reactions. Included is data on the characterisation of the precursor and catalyst. This includes pair distribution analysis, raw X-ray absorption fine-structure measurements, X-ray diffraction measurements, infra-red spectroscopy, and thermogravimetric analysis data in excel files, with text headers. Environmental transmission electron microscopy images are provided in dm3 file format. In addition methanol synthesis and water gas shift testing data is provided in an excel file. Results based upon these data are published at http://dx.doi.org/10.1038/nature16935
