TATA Steel Europe inject coals in their blast furnaces to replace coke which helps improve the process control and decrease the production costs. They seek to further increase coal injection rate and to utilise more technically challenging materials that contain higher amounts of residual elements. However, the implementation of these coals into the process poses a great challenge and the basis of this project will be to identify, quantify and potentially model the issue of element recycling in a blast furnace. The aim of this work will be to improve the understanding of this effect; identify which coals are more prone to this problem; and to investigate potential solutions to mitigate against the negative effects of this on the blast furnace process.
