Abstract



Using
quantitative differential interference contrast microscopy, optical thickness
maps of lipid bilayers are generated which enable the visualisation of lipid
bilayers, including lipid domains, without the need to incorporate
fluorescent probes into the bilayer structure. Using the known refractive index
of lipid bilayers, the optical thickness maps can be used to obtain the
absolute thickness of the lipid bilayers with sub-nanometre precision.
